Michel Barnier announces a 2% increase in the minimum wage from November 1

Michel Barnier announced this Tuesday an increase in the minimum wage of 2% on November 1.

The Prime Minister chooses to bring forward the planned increase in the minimum wage by two months.

This will bring it to 1426 euros net monthly.

“We will increase the minimum wage by 2% from November 1, in anticipation of the date of January 1”announced Michel Barnier during his general policy declaration this Tuesday at the National Assembly. The Prime Minister therefore brings forward by two months an increase which would have proved automatic since the minimum wage is revalued each year on January 1, indexed to inflation measured for the 20% of households with the lowest income. The net monthly amount of the minimum wage will therefore pass the 1400 euros mark, reaching 1426 euros compared to 1398.70 euros currently.

Moreover, “there remain professional sectors in our country in which the minimums are lower than the minimum wage”recalled Michel Barnier. “This is not acceptable, and this will have to be the subject of rapid negotiations. The State will see to it.” “In addition, it has now been shown that our cost reduction system slows down the rise in salaries above the minimum wage: we will see it again”announced the head of government, who hopes that “work pays”.

In addition to this automatic revaluation of the minimum wage every January 1, revaluations can also take place during the year as soon as inflation exceeds 2%. This was the case in May 2023. The government can choose to go beyond the automatic increase with a “nudge”, but there has not been one since 2012.
