Morocco’s Fatima El Idrissi has smashed the world record in the marathon for the visually impaired, a discipline in which Spain won two new medals with silver for Alberto Suárez and bronze for Elena Congost, this Sunday at the Paralympic Games in Paris.

El Idrissi completed the 42,195 metres in 2:48.36, improving by almost six minutes the world record held by Japanese Misato Michishita (2.54:13).

The North African parathlete beat her compatriot Meryem En-Nouhri (2:58:18) by almost 10 minutes at the finish line, with the Spanish Elena Congost (3:00.48) completing the podium.

Michishita finished fourth.

Congost’s medal is the 41st for the Spanish delegation, which minutes earlier won a silver medal with Alberto Suárez’s second place in the marathon for the visually impaired.

The Spanish paramarathoner clocked a time of 2:24.02, almost two minutes behind the winner of the race, Tunisian Wajdi Boukhili (2:22.05).

Moroccan El Amin Chentouf clocked 2:24.35, completing the podium in this category.
