Alpine F1 will start from a position in the points for tomorrow's Sprint in Qatar, thanks to Pierre Gasly's 8th place.
The Frenchman is ahead of direct rivals for the constructors' championship, Nico Hülkenberg and Liam Lawson, which pleases him.
“I'm happy to have qualified eighth for the Sprint. All four leading teams were ultimately very fast, so I think we got the best result we could get today. We're ahead of a Haas and an RB F2 , our opponents in the championship.”
“Our Free Practice had been good and I felt good driving in these conditions. However, I was not as comfortable in Sprint Qualifying and we had to work hard to extricate ourselves from SQ1 and SQ2, gradually lowering small our times.”
“Tomorrow the top eight will score points, so we are in the game. As we know, the championship is close, so I expect a battle with Haas and RB F1 during the Sprint. We have to aim for the points and We will give everything we can.”
Esteban Ocon was still behind with an elimination in SQ1. He will only start 18th.
“It was a complicated evening and we were unable to put together a better lap to qualify higher on the Sprint grid.”
“We have to continue working with the team to find more performance and understand certain points. We will try to seize every opportunity in the race tomorrow as many things can happen in these very fast-paced events.”
“We will also have another opportunity with qualifying, so hopefully we can learn from tonight and find improvements before we start this session.”
