Formula 1 | Russell: Almost all drivers are aligned on the limits not to be crossed

George Russell explains that the subject of track limits is still a big debate between drivers and the FIA and this has not just been resolved by the tougher handling of the stewards in Mexico.

The discussions are moving in the right direction according to him.

“We had the discussion last week in Mexico. The majority of drivers were aligned on what needs to change. The FIA wanted consistency.

“But most think that if something is wrong, you have to make changes and implement them immediately. But if you look at Mexico, penalties were given, they were the right penalties and maybe they should have made it to Austin too.”

“But everyone is more or less aligned on where the boundaries are.”

While Verstappen has said he won't handle these situations differently, Russell believes he will still adapt.

“He's a three-time world champion, he knows what he's doing, there's no doubt about that. And he's a hard runner, he's always been aggressive, and I think that's great.”

“If you go over the limit, you get penalized. If you go over the limit, you achieve something great. And last week he went over the limit, he got penalized. There were times when he was to the limit and he didn't do it.”

“So he knows what he’s doing and I think the penalties last week were correct and he can’t argue with that.”

“He will adapt because it is obviously not in his interest to continue to receive penalties.”
