Object of the week: Emile Reynaud’s praxinoscope
The praxinoscope, invented in 1876 and patented in 1877 by Emile Reynaud, is an optical toy giving the illusion of movement. The particularity of Reynaud's invention is the system of central mirrors which gives fluidity to the movements perceived. Upon its release, the praxinoscope was a real commercial success, allowing the inventor to improve his object. Emile Reynaud thus successively released the theater praxinoscope (the animation is done inside a set), the projection praxinoscope, the optical theater and the relief praxinoscope.
Today, the praxinoscope is a rare object, especially complete examples in perfect condition. On the collection market, prices can soar, like this projection praxinoscope, estimated between €1,500 and €3,000 by Métayer-Mermoz, and finally sold for €61,000!
