Formula 1 | What do Michael Schumacher and Hamilton have in common?

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes 's director of track engineering, worked during his years at the team with the team's two-time world champions, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, both of whom drove Silver Arrows.

Asked about the differences and similarities between the two people who are at the top of the Formula 1 charts, the engineer notes that despite a different approach, the qualities of Schumacher and Hamilton are quite similar.

“They are very different in terms of personality, way of working and engaging with the team” Shovlin said on the Beyond the Grid podcast. “But when you look at what they do behind the wheel, what they do in terms of preparation, what they give in terms of feedback, it’s quite similar.”

“I think Michael was great in the sense that he really raised the level of the team. He came from Ferrari, which had been a dominant force over the previous decade, and we had to work harder when we brought him into our team. We had to work harder when we brought him into our team.”

“A lot of that continued with Lewis, but you had this driver who, if you gave him the right information, if you put the car in the right place, put it on pole position for you. That's a good thing that we were able to continue this method of working with the engineers and pilots.”
