Formula 1 | For this season, Alonso hopes 'simply better' than in 2024

Fernando Alonso has played down the prospect of a big step forward for Aston Martin in 2025.

The Spaniard has played 21 full seasons in Formula 1 and, when his current contract ends, he will be 45 at the end of 2026.

Alonso affirmed that his desire to do well, despite inferior equipment (read here) is stronger than ever.

Today, however, he openly admits that he is feeling the effects of age.

“I think over time you have to change and adapt your body.”

“You can't eat the same foods at 40 as at 20. You don't have the same muscle mass at 40 as at 20. So for my diet, I do a little more research, with nutritionists, following a bit of the vegetarian route But I still feel very strong.”

Alonso also admits to finishing the 2024 season in fairly poor fitness.

“The end of the year was difficult for me. I had an intestinal infection, fever, antibiotics, and after recovering I was injured in Brazil in the muscles of the back, in the bones of collarbone and shoulder from the car bouncing.”

On the positive side, he welcomes the imminent arrival in March of Adrian Newey at Aston Martin, but downplays the impact this renowned genius can have at least in 2025.

“Certainly not in 2025,” Alonso responds when asked if he can be a race winner and title contender again before he has to bow out of F1 for good.

“This year the cars will be the same as last year and it will be practically impossible for us to make such a jump.”

“I hope it will just be better than 2024, but we will not win the championship. Changes are being made to the regulations and Adrian Newey will start to really work on the 2026 project from April after his final phase. discovery.”

As for whether he will continue to race in F1 beyond 2026, Alonso confirms the recent comments of Flavio Briatore, his manager: it will depend on the performance of the first Aston Martin designed by Newey.

“I hope I can enjoy more podiums, some victories and fight for the championship. But I know that 2026 is a year that remains a mystery for everyone. I hope it will be favorable for us. But we will not we don't know yet.”
