Valtteri Bottas believes he could not have done anything better or different to seek a contract extension at Stake F1, and secure a future for the transition from Sauber to Audi. The Finn will be a reserve at Mercedes in 2025 and he has no regrets.
“I would say the two days before the decision, I started hearing rumors and other things” Bottas told Motorsport Week. “But I knew when the last board meeting would be and how it would go.”
“And yes, the decision has been made. I mean it's obvious there's nothing more I could have done. So I accept it. As I said earlier in my little statement, when one door closes, another opens, and it brings new opportunities for the future.”
Bottas regrets the fact that his bosses made a late decision which did not allow him to turn around: “Yeah, it's a bit unlucky how things played out and dragged on. I found myself in a situation where I had no choice but to leave here.”
“And then it didn't work out, so I knew it was over for now. So I think it was bad luck. I think we tried everything we could with management , but things happened in an unfortunate way.”
On the other hand, Bottas did not agree to extend for a year because he wanted to get involved and experience the beginnings of the Audi F1 project: “I always knew it wouldn't be easy for Audi. It will take time, but how long? That's the big question mark.”
“But yes, I was always committed to a long-term project, even if it would be difficult. That's why I always said very clearly that I would not be ready to do just one year. I knew that It would take time, more than a year or two. That's where we are.”
-Somewhat despaired by the way he was not retained, even though he was the team's best driver, Bottas knows that Formula 1 is not about feelings: “I know in any case that this sport is not fair. At the end of the day, it's big business.”
“There are a lot of factors that influence drivers' decisions. So I understand that. It doesn't really upset me. It can happen. I think ultimately I found myself in a bit of an unlucky situation for my career. “
Asked about the fact that he has given everything in 2024, Bottas confirms that he is still doing his best: “Yes, it's in my nature. I always try to do everything I can. And I think I had a good season.”
“Of course, not in terms of results, but if you look at the individual performances, I'm happy. I don't believe anyone, even Max, could have done better with this car. That's how it is.”
