Valtteri Bottas, back with Mercedes as third pilot after leaving Alfa Romeo/Saubershared his thoughts on the difficulties faced by the Silver Arrows since his departure. Once a dominant force in Formula 1, Mercedes has seen a dramatic change in fortunes since Bottas left at the end of 2021. The Finn, who contributed significantly to the team's eight consecutive Constructors' Championships, admits that this decline was unexpected.
Surprised by Mercedes' decline
Bottas expressed surprise at the challenges Mercedes faced with the ground effect regulations introduced in 2022.
“I didn't expect to see the team in this position,” Bottas shared. “It’s a strange time for them. They went from dominating to having to fight to find their bearings under these new rules.”
Mercedes finished fourth in the 2024 Constructors' Championship, their worst result since 2012. Despite flashes of brilliance, including three wins in four races mid-seasonthe team struggled with inconsistency and a car that remained track-dependent.
“Now I feel like there are hints that they are sort of coming back,” added Bottas. “They had great performances, but it’s still very track dependent. I know how Toto [Wolff] is hungry to get back to winning ways, and I think they will eventually. »
Bottas' future in Formula 1
Although Bottas is now a reserve driver, he remains determined to return to a full-time role in F1. His name has been associated with several teams, including Cadillac Racingwhich plans to join the grid in 2026. Its renewed connection with Mercedes also opens up possibilities with teams powered by Mercedes such as McLaren, Williams et Alpineespecially with the readjustment of regulations on the horizon.
“There are a lot of Mercedes-powered cars on the grid, which can suddenly bring opportunities,” and noted Bottas. “And in this sport, you never know what’s going to happen. With 2026 and the changes coming, I'm ready to stay in the game and try to find a way to come back. »
Testing and Staying Sharp
Bottas has hinted that his role with Mercedes could include time on track to ensure he stays sharp and competitive. He sees this as essential if he wants to return to a full-time position.
“If I were to stay in Formula 1, I would like to make sure that option includes some driving, whether it be testing or similar opportunities,” he declared.
A Renewed Partnership with Mercedes
Bottas' return to Mercedes comes with the support of Toto Wolff, with whom he has a strong relationship. This partnership could serve as a springboard for Bottas to explore future opportunities in F1.
“There has been contact, and I am on good terms with Toto,” Bottas said. “I know there is potential to build something for the future. »
A Familiar but Uncertain Path
As Mercedes aims to regain its dominant position, Bottas finds himself in a unique situation to contribute to the team's progress while keeping his F1 aspirations alive. Let it be a future with Cadillac or a return with a Mercedes-powered team, Bottas' journey in F1 seems far from over.
For now, the 34-year-old is back where he enjoyed his greatest success, playing a key role behind the scenes and keeping his eyes on the horizon for a full-time return to the grid.
