The Top 10 in women's tennis will not be complete in Melbourne. Twice Grand Slam title winner and notably a few months ago at Wimbledon, Barbora Krejcikova had to officially give up. “Unfortunately, my back injury, which bothered me at the end of last season, has not yet completely healed“, explained the 10th in the world on her X account. It's very disappointing because I love playing in Melbourne and I have great memories of reaching the quarter-finals last year.”
At the time, she was eliminated by the current world No.1, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, on the way to her second title in Melbourne. “I'm working hard to get back to full health and can't wait to see you on court soon“, added Krejcikova. The 29-year-old player will therefore be absent from the Adelaide tournament this week, just like the Italian Jasmine Paolini, 4th in the world, and the Russian Mirra Andreeva (16th), who withdrew on Sunday in order to preserve themselves before Melbourne.
Krejcikova won the title at Wimbledon last year, three years after lifting the trophy at Roland Garros. She also won seven Grand Slam doubles titles, including two at the Australian Open, and three major mixed doubles titles, all in Melbourne. The Australian Open begins on January 12.
