Charles Philip Ingalls was born in Cuba on January 10, 1836. He is the third child of ten. When he was young, he moved to Illinois and then to Wisconsin. It is in 1960 he married Caroline Lake Quinerwith whom he had five children: Mary, Laura, Carrie, Charles Frederick and Grace.

It was after their marriage that Charles, Caroline and their family headed west, moving numerous times before settling in Walnut Grove. As is the case in Little House on the Prairiethe real Charles Ingalls was described by his daughter Laura as being an inveterate worker, a loving family man, a musician, a poet. In short, a man of many facets who knew how to be of service to his neighbors and whose influence was great.

The real Charles Ingalls has died at the age of 66. After suffering for many weeks, it is June 8, 1902 that the American pioneer died of cardiovascular disease.
