After a convincing first season in Formula 1, Oscar Piastri confirmed all the good things that were thought of him at McLaren. The Australian driver won his first races and landed a nice financial jackpot. We take stock of what Mark Webber's protégé would have received.
After having signed two podiums in 2023, Oscar Piastri has confirmed in 2024. At the wheel of his McLaren, the former Alpine academy driver offered himself two Grand Prix victories (Hungary and Azerbaijan) and six podiums. He also has a major architect of the constructors' title won by McLaren. A small feat when we know that the British team had not been constructors' world champion since 1998! On a purely accounting level, he completed fourth in the drivers standings behind Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
Very significant bonuses
Thanks to this very good season, Oscar Piastri increased his remuneration. According to Forbes magazine, his fixed salary is 5 million dollars per year. However, he would have reached 22 million this year. The calculation is simple: between the constructors' title, his two victories and his podiums, Piastri pocketed $17 million in bonuses ! In the end, he touches plus Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz or Sergio Perez !
Conquering the world title in 2025?
After this very good 2024 season, Oscar Piastri knows that his McLaren will be capable of seeking victories in 2025. Enough to whet his appetite and claim a leadership position in the team at the expense of Lando Norris? Not sure. Firstly, the car will have to respond straight away and not after 4 or 5 races like this year. Then, Norris is a child of McLaren unlike Piastri. If the Australian wants to become a leader, he will have to prove it on the track. And then we will have to count on fierce competition for victory with Red Bull, Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes.
