Since the completely crazy finale in Abu Dhabi during the 2021 season, relations between Mercedes and Red Bull have deteriorated. But recently, in the podcast “High Performance”, the main team of the Silver Arrows, Toto Wolff, admitted to having very good relations with the clan of Max Verstappen. After the numerous rumors and the solid performances of the German manufacturer, during certain weekends, the Austrian did not hide the fact that he had the idea of recruiting the three-time world champion. Before the 2015 campaign, the latter narrowly missed the boat to sign him, the Dutchman finally jumped into the Toro Rosso seat. As a reminder, the Hasselt native has concluded an agreement until 2028 with the Milton Keynes team. But Toto Wolff hopes to change the situation.
Verstappen in Wolff's sights
“We get along very well, not always in the public eye. I know Jos [Verstappen, le père de Max] for a long time. He’s my age, we have similar views on racing. And I wouldn't want the year 2021 to cast a shadow on the personal relationships we have. It was hard enough that year, but the relationships are intact. God knows what will happen in the future.”
Although Toto Wolff has completed his two seats for the 2025 season, he has suggested that the Max Verstappen option would still be possible. He also returned to his choice of drivers: George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes boss showed his enthusiasm for this young line-up.
“It is natural now to move towards the next generation. Max is a great driver and an interesting personality, and God knows what will happen in the future, but having Kimi and George in the car, real Mercedes juniors who have proven themselves at every stage of their careers and we have supported, I’m very excited to be in this situation.”
