Maffei joined Liberty Media in 2005, before taking over as CEO a year later. He was one of the architects of the takeover of Formula 1 at the end of 2016, before acquiring MotoGP at the start of the year. Maffei first appointed Chase Carey as President of Formula 1, before choosing Stefano Domenicali, in post since January 1, 2021. Maffei will remain an advisor to Liberty Media, in order to ensure continuity with his interim replacement, Liberty Media President John Malone.

Maffei was also at the center of 's refusal to welcome the Andretti team onto the grid in 2025 or 2026. Mario Andretti, the 1978 Formula One world champion, told NBC News that Maffei “assured me to do everything in his power to ensure that Michael Andretti could never join the Formula 1 grid. This was something that really shocked me. We're talking business, I didn't think it could be so personal. »
