This change symbolizes Mercedes' transition to a new horizon, and although Hamilton's departure comes as a shock, the team is preparing with determination for this new era.
When Ferrari announced that it had signed Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 F1 season, the news shook the F1 world. The departure of the seven-time world champion from Mercedes to the Scuderia marks a major turning point in the history of the sport.
This unexpected decision also allowed Mercedes to avoid a difficult conversation with its emblematic driver, as Toto Wolff recounts in the book Inside Mercedes F1 : Life in
the Fast Lane.
A considered contract for Hamilton at Mercedes
Wolff explains that Mercedes only signed Hamilton to a one-year contract, a decision taken cautiously: “In our sport, cognitive acuity is essential” he says, emphasizing the need to plan for the future.
Wolff compares this approach to that of coaches in other sports, such as Sir Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola, who have been able to renew their teams by focusing on youth.
The decision to let Hamilton go, although difficult, was part of a long-term strategy for Mercedes. By integrating younger drivers, Wolff plans to build a team capable of remaining competitive for years to come.
A planned departure, but not anticipated
Despite being prepared to see Hamilton leave the team one day, Wolff did not expect such a departure at that time. In the book, he says: “I knew Lewis would eventually leave, but I didn't know why he chose to change teams before we even knew our future competitiveness.”
This sudden change placed intense pressure on Mercedes, who found themselves having to quickly adjust their plans. Wolff says he missed opportunities with other drivers, such as Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, due to contracts already signed. The choice finally fell on Kimi Antonelli, representing the next generation for Mercedes.
A new era for Mercedes
Despite the complexity of the situation, Wolff expresses some relief: “We avoided the moment when we would have had to tell F1’s most iconic driver that we were considering another path.”
By opting for a new generation of talent, Mercedes is ensuring a promising future while closing a chapter with Hamilton, one of F1's most iconic drivers.
