Mbappé and Olise on fire, bad evening for Maignan… the barometer of French internationals

The first evening of the 2024-2025 edition of the Champions League had mixed fortunes for the French internationals.

Tops

Kylian Mbappé, the rise to power

Author of a good performance, the French player became the 15th player in the history of Real Madrid to score in his first match in the Champions League with the Merengue. The former PSG player opened the scoring in the 46th minute of play on a very good service from Rodrygo. The French player therefore begins his European campaign ideally.

Incisive on several occasions, Mbappé has put together a string of good performances in a flamboyant attack. “I can do more… I know I can do more”reacted the Frenchman to the microphone of Movistar after his team’s victory. “Every game I feel better and now I’m scoring goals”.

Enzo Millot struggled

The young French midfielder from VFB Stuttgart stood out despite his team’s defeat (3-1). Positioned in support of his striker Deniz Undav, the 22-year-old player was initially very visible in the first half, trying his luck several times. More discreet in the second half, he was replaced by Demirovic in the 75th minute. His performance nevertheless suggests good omens for the future.

Michael Olise attended the party

This is what you call a successful return. Coming from Crystal Palace this summer, Michael Olise, like his team, had a perfect start in the Champions League. While his team won 9 goals to 2 against Dinamo Zagreb, Olise, starting on the right flank of the Munich attack, scored twice in the 38th and 61st minutes. He scored the first goal with a header, the second with his left foot. Replaced in the 69th minute by Leroy Sané, the young Frenchman seemed to please the Munich crowd.

Earlier in the evening, Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne also had a very good game in his team’s 3-0 win at Young Boys Bern. Following on from his start in against Belgium with Les Bleus last week, the former PSG player was one of the best players in the game for the Villans.

Flops

Mike Maignan, disaster evening

This is becoming, unfortunately, a habit. Regularly injured since his debut at the highest level, Mike Maignan did it again last night. While his team was trailing 2 goals to 1 by Liverpool, the French goalkeeper had to give up his place in the 51st minute, replaced by the young Lorenzo Torriani. The French goalkeeper was injured in the 48th minute after a collision with Diogo Jota. Limping off, he is said to be suffering from a bruise to his right thigh. Having seen his responsibility engaged during the first two opposing goals, the former player definitely had a difficult evening.

Ferland Mendy overwhelmed

While he did not hesitate to come and help his teammates offensively, Ferland Mendy was regularly hampered on the left flank of his defense by the incursions of the German Leweling and even by that of Millot. He notably lost five balls and lost three duels out of 5. Replaced in the 76th minute by Fran Garcia, the French full-back will have to do better in the upcoming matches if he wants to keep his place.

Youssouf Fofana in the hard

A month after joining AC Milan and three days after scoring his first goal with his new club, Youssouf Fofana was expected to deliver. Having received a yellow card in the 31st minute after an unsportsmanlike gesture against Mohamed Salah, the French player, associated with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, had an average match like many of his teammates and will have to improve in the coming matches if he does not want to compromise his team’s chances of qualifying. He notably lost 12 balls.
