Tristan Verrier will not have great memories of the French Cyclo-cross Hopes Championship in Pontchâteau. Coming with the desire to tickle the very best, he was unable to fully play his card, due to a twist of fate during the event. The member of Team Guével Roadborn is thus satisfied with a place at the bottom of the Top 10 (see ranking). A disappointment, inevitably, that he took the time to share with DirectVelo after the race.
DirectVelo: You were the victim of a problem that cost you dearly during this French Championship…
Tristan Verrier: My shoe broke on the first lap but I tried to get going again quickly. I wasn’t at full throttle at that moment, I saw that I was riding at the speed of the guy in second place so I was strong until this problem. When I had to change shoes, I lost a lot of time and went far away. I was also stuck in traffic, and thus far from the match for the leading roles. This is what costs me a little in the end. It’s very frustrating.
We imagine that you were going through very difficult times in your head at the time of this incident…
At the time, I was disgusted. I stopped while the others were pedaling on the first lap so I paid for it. I didn’t give up and I finished completely. It hurt me because I had done everything well, my start was good and I was in the match. Plus I’m not responsible for the breakage… It’s all the more frustrating.
“I REALLY PAY THE RISE FROM THE START”
What exactly happened?
It was the wedge under the shoe that broke, it no longer held and I could no longer clip it after the stairs so I quickly changed when I quickly realized it.
You were very far from the best for a while, around 15th place, but you didn’t give up!
I went up gradually, until I saw the two AS Bike riders just ahead for the 6e place. Unfortunately I really pay for the climb at the beginning. Physically I was strong, which is encouraging all the same. There was also the selection for the World Championships which took place today and I know that I have my place there but perhaps this mechanical problem will fail me. Even with this problem I do 8e so I’m not far but there was better to do.
