“Tears in his eyes”, Tadej Pogacar facing immense distress

Competing in the Trois Vallées Varésines, Tadej Pogacar welcomed the organizers’ decision to stop the race due to weather conditions, despite their distress.

Caution prevailed. While torrential rain fell on Lombardy, the Trois Vallées Varésines race was in fact stopped about a hundred kilometers from the finish before being simply canceled. The organizers, who had decided to remove two laps of the circuit before the start, sided with the opinion of the runners, Tadej Pogacar at the forefront.

“We tried to race, but on the descent of the last lap I was in second position behind Covi, but we couldn’t see where we were going, explained the new world champion in comments relayed by Cyling Pro Net. Everyone wanted to stop. It was just a matter of knowing what trick someone was going to fall into. These are the worst falls when you lose the handlebars. I know a lot of friends from the Peloton who have had concussions this year. This is something we need to be more careful about in the peloton. »

“We are sad”

And the Slovenian paid tribute to the organizers for their wise decision. “We understand that the organizers want a race, but in the end, the runners made the right decision. We are sad that the race cannot take place, but it is what it is, he continued.
Fortunately, everyone was reasonable. I could see how heavy it was for the head of the organization. He had tears in his eyes. This race means a lot to them, but when you can’t run, you can’t. They understood it immediately. I’m really grateful to them.”

Tadej Pogacar, however, lost big because of this cancellation. With his 24 victories acquired since the start of the season, he could indeed seize the record for victories over a season, in the 21st century. He is currently only ahead of Alessando Petacchi, who raised his arms 25 times in 2005. In the event of victory in the Tour of Lombardy, the leader of the UAE-Emirates Team will therefore not be able to than equal it.
