Cycling Worlds: Belgian Lotte Kopecky retains her crown, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot abandons

She thought she would give up her world champion jersey. Then she returned to the battle. She resisted attacks from Demi Vollering (Netherlands) and Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Australia). Finally, she settled the lead group in the sprint. This Sunday, the Belgian Lotte Kopecky was crowned at the Zurich Worlds for the second time in her career after Glasgow in 2023. Chloé Dygert (USA) obtained silver and Elisa Longo Borghini (Italy) bronze.

However, 50 km before the finish, Kopecky was chasing the leading quartet. He attacked the last lap a minute ahead of the pursuers. Marianne Vos (Netherlands), Riejanne Markus (Netherlands), Justine Ghekiere (Belgium) and Ruby Roseman-Gannon therefore had a comfortable margin and were preparing to compete for victory with their muscles.

A crazy, illegible race

But behind, a group of runners stood out from the rest of the peloton. Among these pursuers, favorites: Lotte Kopecky (Belgium), Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, Chloe Dygert and Liane Lippert (Germany). For her part, Frenchwoman Juliette Labous missed the train and remained on the platform.

Finally, the lead of the leading quartet melted away and Marianne Vos was the first to break. Lotte Kopecky was also dropping meters and her dreams were fading away. Then the two women finally came back on their heads! In this spectacular and illegible race, anything could still happen. With 5 km to go, Elisa Longo Borghini launched a terrible attack but once again, as she took off, her wings collapsed and the other contenders returned. Everything was going to be resolved in a sprint and in this little game, Lotte Kopecky won.

For her part, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot gave up, around fifty kilometers from the finish. Mountain biking gold medalist this summer at the 2024 Olympic Games, the Frenchwoman missed her return to the road this Sunday. A lap later, her compatriot Jade Wiel also laid down her arms.
