The horizon is getting a little darker for Wissam Ben Yedder. As revealed by L’Équipe, the 34-year-old striker, without a club since leaving Monaco this summer, has been arrested in a new sexual assault case.
The Nice prosecutor’s office confirmed to RMC and RMC Sport that the player was arrested in Cap d’Ail (Alpes-Maritimes) at the wheel of his vehicle on the night of Friday to Saturday last by the police and taken into custody for “sexual assault, refusal to comply and driving under the influence of alcohol”. This arrest follows a complaint filed by a woman born in 2001 reporting acts of sexual assault committed by the person concerned in the evening.
Ben Yedder was brought before the court early Sunday afternoon as part of a deferred appearance, with a psychological assessment of the victim to be established. The French international (19 caps, 3 goals) is being prosecuted for sexual assault while clearly intoxicated, refusal to comply and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Placed under judicial supervision
Pending his appearance before the criminal court on October 15, the prosecution has requested that he be placed in pre-trial detention. However, the judge of liberties and detention (JLD) has decided to place him under judicial supervision pending his judgment.
The prosecution said it had appealed this decision by the JLD because, according to it, pretrial detention appears to be the only way to avoid any risk of pressure on the victim or witnesses, to prevent the repetition of the facts while he is under judicial supervision for rape and to guarantee that he remains at the disposal of the justice system in view of the real risks of absconding.
Ben Yedder and his brother already accused of rape last year
Wissam Ben Yedder has already been under investigation since last summer for another case in which he is accused by a young woman of “rape, attempted rape and sexual assault”. He spent forty-eight hours in police custody, between August 8 and 10, 2023, before being released under judicial supervision upon payment of bail of 900,000 euros.
A long, “tense and trying” confrontation took place last May with the complainant. Her younger brother Sabri was also confronted by a second woman who accuses him of rape. The complainants accuse Ben Yedder and his brother of forcing them to perform sexual acts on the evening of July 10, 2023. Both men have denied the facts since the start of the proceedings.
