This is probably not the gift that the Ministry of Ecological Transition was expecting for Christmas. The decline in French greenhouse gas emissions is slowing. They decreased by 2.4% over the first three quarters of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, excluding carbon sinks. This reduction turns out to be much less strong than that recorded (− 6%) during the first nine months of 2023 compared to 2022. In detail, carbon emissions were reduced in the first two quarters of 2024 (respectively − 5% and − 2.2%) but increased slightly in the third quarter (+ 0.5%), according to provisional data published by the Interprofessional Technical Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (Citepa), Friday December 27.
Compliance with France’s climate objectives implies a pace twice as fast, since it involves reducing emissions by 4.7% per year on average between 2022 and 2030. In 2023, they had fallen by 5.8%. compared to 2022, with a decline in all major emitting sectors, a good result.
“This slowdown, fortunately, still leaves us on the right trajectory. Given the efforts we have made over the past two years, we are not falling behinddeclared Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Friday on RTL. But it reminds us that we must not let our guard down. »
