Motorists very annoyed by this practice of cyclists, although it is legal

There is a practice of cyclists that motorists hate. However, be aware that it is authorized by the Highway Code!

On the road, motorists have have difficulty getting along with cyclists. It is also not uncommon to witness very tense scenes between these individuals. There is also a practice that drivers do not support.

A practice hated by motorists

Cohabitation between cyclists and motorists is often a source of tension on the road. For many drivers, the road is theirs. They view cyclists as trespassers who break the rules.

There is also one thing that cyclists do that drivers cannot stand. However, this is a practice that remains authorized by law. It is about the fact that some travel in the opposite direction.

Please note, however, that article R412-28-1 of the Highway Code stipulates that, in areas where the speed is limited to 30 km/h, cyclists have the right to travel against the flow of traffic. Unless a specific sign prohibits it.

This measure mainly concerns one-way streets where the speed limit does not exceed 30 km/h. To indicate this authorization, a sign with the words “except bicycles” is placed under the no entry sign.

If this sign is absent, the cyclist could then risk a fine of 135 euros. But as long as it is present, driving against traffic in these areas is completely legal. And this, even if this practice is hated by motorists.

No danger for cyclists?

The main reason for this authorization is to provide greater fluidity to cyclists' journeys. This prevents them from making unnecessary detours or driving on sidewalks.

Which would endanger pedestrians. By making their travel easier, cities are seeking to favor this ecological mode of transport. They also wish to encourage citizens to leave their cars in the garage.

This measure has received a lot of attention. A study carried out by Cerema, the Center for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and planning, shows that wrong-way traffic does not present an increased risk of accident.

On the contrary, statistics even show a decrease in accidents involving cyclists in areas where this practice remains authorized. Indeed, motorists are more attentive when they know that cyclists can arrive opposite.

More and more French cities are moving to zones limited to 30 km/h. This is particularly the case in , , , , and many others. These famous zones are multiplying.

A caution to respect

This makes it safer for cyclists to travel. And to promote better coexistence with motorists. On the other hand, the latter must also make efforts.

To improve this cohabitation, it is crucial that everyone respects the rules. Cyclists must ensure that the “except bicycles” sign is present before riding against the flow of traffic.

As for motorists, they must accept that cyclists have their place on the road. Even if they are traveling in a direction that is not theirs. On the other hand, it is a practice that is not always unanimous.

Despite everything, the authorities do not intend to ban it. As said previously, it is a practice which does not present no real danger since the road is limited to 30.

On the other hand, it is essential that motorists do not go beyond this speed limit.
