This is a big blow for Marc Bernal and FC Barcelona. A starter in the first three La Liga games this season with the Catalan club, the 17-year-old defensive midfielder suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on August 27 against Rayo Vallecano. The young talent underwent surgery on Monday and will be out until September 2025, according to Barça’s press release.

“Marc Bernal was successfully operated on for his left knee anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury by Doctor Joan Carles Monllau, under the supervision of the Club’s Medical Services, at the Barcelona hospital on Monday morning,” Barça’s statement said. “The expected recovery time is 12 months.”

Another absence in midfield

Trained at La Masia, Marc Bernal revealed himself last season with the reserve team, which earned him a place in the professional team this summer for pre-season. Against the European big guns during friendlies, Marc Bernal got himself playing time, around an hour per match, gradually gaining the trust of his coach Hansi Flick.

Under contract at the club until 2026, Marc Bernal had taken advantage of the injuries of Gavi and Frenkie De Jong to be a starter at the start of the season. His progress has therefore been stopped in its tracks. Without him, Barça had won (7-0) against Valladolid before the international break, consolidating its status as leader, with four league wins in as many games.
