Chills to be expected: the first -20° of the season even arrives in Montreal

A first real encounter of the season with the cold could soon be on the agenda for some sectors of the province, particularly for the greater Montreal region. Are you ready to shiver? Forecast.

Several latecomers

Gatineau, Montreal, Quebec, Rimouski, Gaspé: what do all these cities have in common? They are among the sectors of the province which were not able to get their first -20° of the season. Some regions are therefore slightly behind schedule since, as a general rule, this threshold is normally reached during the month of December. The exception to the rule is Rimouski, where the average for the first -20° is January 6.

Elsewhere in La Belle Province, December 7 seems to have been a winning date in terms of “unlimited thrills”! Indeed, further north in the province, notably in Val-D’or, Saguenay and Sept-Îles, it is at this time of the season that the thermometer reached -20° for the first time.

How much has Quebec shivered until now?

Yes, we were treated to cold in January, but the cold was more bitter in December. As of January 12, among the coldest temperatures recorded in the four corners of the province (since September 1), note Val-D’or which reached -27.6° on December 22. Four days later, Montreal experienced its coldest of the season so far with precisely -17.8°.

MINUS TWENTY 2

The big cold is waiting to meet you

For the coldest among you, the key word would be to keep your woolen socks, as well as your warmest blankets, close at hand. For what? Because there seems to be a cold, even shivering, trend that is setting in more and more for next week. The Arctic cold could really descend on Quebec and cause -20° all the way to the south.

MINUS TWENTY 3

It is around January 20 that the cold will become more pronounced. It could actually be the coldest time of winter.

Montreal is in charge

If you are from the metropolitan area and you don’t particularly like the cold weather, know that you are not so much to complain about compared to other areas. Last year, the thermometer did not reach -20° at all in the metropolis! Otherwise, over the past four years, this icy event has always appeared quite late.
