DECRYPTION – China’s lack of transparency about the beginnings of the pandemic in Wuhan prevents scientists from establishing a solid scenario on the emergence of Covid.

Will we one day know the origin of Sars-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19 and one of the most serious pandemics in contemporary history? It is clear that, five years later, scientists have some certainties and many doubts.

Let’s start with the certainties. The city of Wuhan, in central China, is the first focus of the epidemic. Its seafood market (Huanan), where a very diverse fauna was crowded, played a role as a springboard. A study published last September in the journal Cell shows that numerous viruses were circulating in the bays just before the epidemic and, among them, Sars-CoV-2 was found in cages of several animal species including raccoon dogs and small Asian carnivores.
