“It’s a steep regulatory step”: VAT on gas boilers will increase from 5.5% to 10%

The decree signed before the fall of the Barnier government comes into force on December 1, 2025.

This is news that makes unions but especially consumers cringe. From the January 1stthe TVA concerning the material as well as the installation of THPE gas boilers (Very high energy performance) will go from 5.5% to 10%announced the Ministry of Ecological Transition to our colleagues in Ouest .

The decree published in the Official Journal date of December 24, 2024 but, is dated December 4 and, was signed by the ministers of the Barnier government : Laurent Saint-Martin for the Budget, Agnès Pannier-Runacher for the Ecological Transition and Valérie Létard for Housing. Despite the fall of this government, this change will still take place. “By decree, we can only move from one reduced rate to another reduced rate,” the ministry told Ouest-France.

This change in VAT will increase the cost of installation of a gas boiler whose current cost is between 4,000 and 5,000 euros.

Initially, the 2025 finance bill anticipated that this VAT increases to 20%but the government was censored and the budget abandoned.

Exceptions

He is all the same still possible to benefit VAT at 5.5% if you have made a dated quote, accepted by both parties and a deposit has been collected before January 1st.

If you already have a boilerVAT will also not change in the following cases: if you need to repair your boiler or if you need to maintain it.

In a press release, the national union of climate engineering maintenance companies (SYNASAV), which is outraged by this news, wrote: “In form (taking advantage of Christmas Eve) as well as in substance (discrimination of low-income populations purchasing power), SYNASAV can only deplore this abrupt regulatory notch imposed on the profession.”

This increase will therefore penalize nearly 12 million French people who use these boilers.
