The situation at Dakar City Hall is reaching its climax. The municipal office, exasperated by the blockade imposed on the gates of City Hall, launched a firm appeal to the Senegalese authorities, in particular to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, for this situation to end without delay.
In a press release, the members of the office denounce a series of restrictions imposed since the declaration, by the deputy to the Prefect of Dakar, of the alleged resignation of Mayor Barthélémy Dis. This context led to a prolonged occupation of City Hall by the police, seriously hampering the functioning of the institution. The press release reports that town hall workers are now forced to present their professional card to access their offices, while users face difficulties in benefiting from public services.

Even more worrying, municipal councilors, including members of the municipal office, are refused entry to City Hall, despite presenting their official badges and wearing their scarves. “This situation is unacceptable in a state of law,” declares the municipal office, recalling that the functioning of the municipal council has not been officially called into question. In their press release, the members of the office directly challenge several key authorities: Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the Minister of Local Authorities and the Minister of the Interior. They ask them to take immediate measures to put an end to what they describe as “abuses”.
The municipal office thus demands the immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade which it considers “illegal” and which, according to them, undermines decentralization and the image of local institutions. Despite this tense context, the municipal office is maintaining the municipal council session, scheduled for this Thursday, December 26, 2024 at 4 p.m. On the agenda is the examination of the 2025 draft budget.
