Statistics Canada estimates that 176,699 people were added to the Canadian population between 1is July and 1is October 2024, representing the slowest pace of growth since the first quarter of 2022.

The Canadian population is estimated at approximately 41.5 million people. The population of Quebec is estimated at 9.1 million people.

International migration continues to account for most of the population increase.

Political decisions

The federal government has tightened rules for the temporary foreign worker program and capped study permits after facing significant policy scrutiny over the impact of high population growth on housing and services.

According to Statistics Canada, the third quarter net increase in the number of non-permanent residents in Canada was the lowest in a third quarter since 2015, with the exception of the third quarter of 2020 , when the COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp decline.

About 80,000 people moved between provinces in the third quarter, marking a decline in interprovincial migration that is approaching pre-pandemic levels.
