The circulation of Covid-19 is increasing in Guadeloupe, according to health authorities, who are calling for compliance with barrier gestures to push back the disease. The same is true in Martinique, while the figures are stable in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. The risk of the virus spreading during the long school holidays must be taken seriously.

The number of Covid-19 infections continues to increase in Guadeloupe.

About ten days ago, 675 patients were diagnosed positive for Covid-19 in Guadeloupe, according to Public Health France.
Health authorities fear that the circulation of this infectious disease will accelerate during the long school holidays. And for good reason: for several weeks now, the number of suggestive clinical cases has been increasing significantly locally, as well as in other French territories in the Caribbean zone. However, the inevitable flow of vacationers in July and August amplifies this increased surveillance by the health authorities.
The latter already recommend the return of barrier gestures: systematic hand washing, or even wearing a mask.

Four indicators have been scrutinized daily by the Regional Health Agency (ARS), for several weeks, to monitor the circulation of the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus.
The first is the number of suggestive cases, linked to the passage of patients to community doctors. This figure saw a weekly increase of 2.5 points 10 days ago, going from 275 to 675 cases.
The second is that of visits to emergency rooms for suspected Covid-27, over the same period, with almost 40% of cases involving people aged over 65.
As for hospitalizations, which constitute the third indicator, they are also progressing: 5 patients were hospitalized, during week 25 (from June 17 to 23, 2024), compared to 2 the previous one.
Finally, the last measurement concerns the positivity rate, in relation to the tests carried out. It remains stable: 15%, or 59 positive tests out of 384 carried out.

This upward trend is also observed in Martinique, but remains less noticeable in the Northern Communities. Indeed, in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, the number of suggestive cases is rather stable, for the time being.

As early as mid-June 2024, the ARS warned the population against the alarming increase in the spread of the virus in the archipelago, in view of the figures recorded at the beginning of the month.

As a reminder, Covid-19 is at the origin of a pandemic which, between 2019 and 2021, claimed millions of victims. Over the course of the successive waves, in France alone, 116,000 people died in hospital or in residential care facilities for dependent elderly people (EHPAD).

With the return of the virus to the French West Indies, health precautions are essential: everyone must be careful to cough and sneeze into their elbow, or wear a mask in the presence of people at risk, especially when they are sick; so many reflexes that we will have to start having again to limit the circulation of the coronavirus.
