Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Matt Damon… Christopher Nolan will adapt “The Odyssey” for the cinema with a cast of superstars

A literary must-have adapted for the screen. Flagship director Christopher Nolan is currently working on a film adaptation of Homer's “The Odyssey”, Universal Studios revealed this Monday on X. An epic film with many names of Hollywood superstars in the cast.

“Christopher Nolan's next film, The Odysseyis a legendary action epic filmed around the world using the all-new IMAX cinema technology,” describes Universal Studios.

For this retelling of Homer's work, the famous director has assembled a team of Hollywood megastars, reports the specialist site Variety: Matt Damon (seen in “Jason Bourne” and “Interstellar”), Tom Holland (“Spider- Man,” “Uncharted”), Zendaya (“Euphoria,” “Challengers”), Anne Hathaway (“The Dark Knight Rises,” “Les Misérables”), Lupita Nyong’o (“Star Wars,” “Twelve Years”) a Slave”), Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”, “Tenet”) and Charlize Theron (“Mad Max”, “Monster”).

Production on the film is expected to begin in the first half of 2025. The screenplay will be written by Christopher Nolan, who will produce the film with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their company Syncopy.

Dating from ancient Greece, “The Odyssey” is an epic by Homer, considered one of the greatest masterpieces of literature. The story relates the eventful journey of Ulysses, a Greek hero who, after the Trojan War, tries to find his wife Penelope, on the island of Ithaca. During his journey, Ulysses meets key mythological characters, and also, at the same time, tells the story of the historic Trojan War.

The essential epic has already been adapted for the cinema, in 1954, by the Italian director Mario Camerini. The Odyssey has also seen several television adaptations, the last of which in 2013, by Frédéric Azémar.

This new adaptation by Christopher Nolan, known for “Inception”, “Oppenheimer” and even “Tenet”, will be released in “cinemas around the world on July 17, 2026”, assure Universal Studios.
