Laure Manaudou singled out by the observatory of sectarian abuses: why is her reconversion controversial?

Laure Manaudou takes a new turn. After covering the 2024 Olympic Games, the former swimming champion launched into well-being, or rather into kinesiology, a practice which has its roots in Chinese medicine. In the columns of Current Womanthe mother of Manon, Lou and Sacha is delighted to have finished her “course in kinesiology” in this holistic technique of psycho-corporal rebalancing which aims to help people emotionally and physically.“I have validated my 600 hours of internship, all I have to do is pass the certification”explains Laure Manaudou before specifying this new direction: “How to manage in a group, how to help people psychologically is something that fascinates me”. A new activity that worries, and for good reason.

Although kinesiology is recognized in certain countries, such as Canada, it remains an unrecognized practice in . Founded in the 1960s by American chiropractor Dr. George Goodheart, this practice relies on assessing a patient’s neurological condition with a “muscle test.” In June 2023, the Order of Physicians warned of the risks of sectarian aberrations linked to certain alternative medicines, including kinesiology.

The possible danger of“mental influence”

For its part, Miviludes (Interministerial Mission for Vigilance and the Fight against Sectarian Abuses) points out this activity and the possible danger of“mental influence” self-proclaimed therapists on their patients, with training that varies considerably in content, duration and cost. On its site, the interministerial observatory of sectarian aberrations warns against kinesiology, including “the theses developed by these pseudo-therapists are based on a psychologizing approach based on three postulates: the patient’s guilt in the development of his illness or his discomfort, the anxiety of the illness and the demand for better -being in an individualistic and materialistic society”.

And for good reason: “This so-called ‘new medicine’ is based on the postulate that all illness is the result of an intense psychological shock and an unresolved inner conflict”. Miviludes indicates that this practice “endangers the member when he suffers from a serious pathology or develops mental dysfunctions induced by his therapist”. She adds: “In addition to the direct victim, these situations are the cause of painful family breakdowns, particularly for children”. For the moment, Laure Manaudou has not reacted to the many concerns raised by her reconversion.
