Princess Marie of Denmark photographs her daughter Athena for her 13th birthday
It is in Washington that Countess Athena de Monpezat will blow out the 13 candles on her birthday cake, this January 24, 2025. Countess Athena and her brother, Count Henrik, have been living for a year and a half in the United States, where their father, Prince Joachim, works there as a Danish Defense attaché. Despite the distance, the Danish Royal House did not break the tradition of revealing a new photo of the happy birthday girl of the day.

Princess Marie, sister-in-law of King Frederik X, took a photo of her daughter Athena, who is posing in front of a library. In this photo, we see very light makeup on the teenager's face, including mascara on the eyelashes. It is especially the resemblance with his mother that is now striking.

Countess Athena looks more and more like her mother
Since the accession to the throne of her uncle, King Frederik He is now in 9th position. She is the last descendant of Queen Margrethe to appear in the order of succession, which still includes Princess Benedikte, sister of Queen Margrethe, in 10th position. Countess Athena is the youngest descendant of Queen Margrethe, a former sovereign who abdicated just a year ago. The announcement of the abdication, after 52 years of reign, came as a total surprise to the population.
Countess Athena was born Princess Athena of Denmark. Since January 1, 2023, Athena, her brother Henrik, as well as their two half-brothers, Nikolai and Felix, have been stripped of their title of Prince of Denmark, now recognized as Counts of Monpezat, a title created in 2008, ten years before the death of their grandfather, Prince Henrik, husband of Queen Margrethe, born Henri de Laborde de Monpezat. Queen Margrethe deposed Prince Joachim's four children to allow her youngest son's descendants to live a life outside of palaces and royal constraints.
