Among the future Star Wars films, there is the one entrusted to filmmaker Shawn Levy. The American press reports that the production would seek to have Ryan Gosling, the Canadian actor known for Barbie, Drive or else Blade Runner 2049to the casting. For a role that remains to be seen.
When we talk about the future of Star Wars in cinema, there is often talk of four films in particular. A feature film The Mandalorian & Groguanother about Rey, as well as an adventure 25,000 years in the past. But in the pipeline of Disney and Lucasfilm, other projects are biding their time – like the one entrusted to Shawn Levy.
Until now, a certain artistic vagueness reigned around. The 56-year-old Canadian, known for having directed Night at the Museum, Free Guy and, recently, Deadpool et Wolverine (read our review of Deadpool 3), was hardly talkative. To date, the story, the time period in which the adventure will take place, the cast and the release date are left to speculation.
Ryan Gosling, future star de Star Wars ?
But things may be becoming clearer. In its January 21 edition, the Hollywood Reporter magazine, generally very reliable on behind the scenes of the film industry, reports that Lucasfilm and Disney are determined to secure the services of Canadian actor Ryan Gosling for the Star Wars film of Shawn Levy.
Ryan Gosling, 44, is one of the most prominent actors today. It was recently released from a huge cinema box, Barbiein which he plays Ken, the love interest of the famous doll played by Margot Robbie. Most recently, he starred in the action comedy The Fall Guyalongside Emily Blunt.
Revealed in Drive in 2011, Ryan Gosling saw his career take off, with two notable films in particular: La La Land (2016), awarded a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical film, and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), his first major science fiction film, which also allows him to cross paths with a certain… Harrison “Han Solo” Ford.
Born in 1980, Ryan Gosling was too young to discover the trilogy Star Wars at the cinema. To our knowledge, he has never made an explicit statement suggesting that he would like to play in Star Wars (although he possibly shared the little boy’s dream of being a Jedi). In any case, this does not invalidate THR’s lead.
-For the record, the name of Ryan Gosling had already been the subject of a rumor in 2013, when the postlogy was under construction. The Canadian has been cited as a potential member of the cast of The Force Awakens. But a denial from the actor’s agents made things clear: the filmmaker of Episode VII never met the actor to include him.
What role for Ryan Gosling in this Star Wars ?
This missed opportunity ten years ago will perhaps be repaired this time, if the negotiations are successful. However, we do not know for what role. A Jedi? A bounty hunter? A droid? Perhaps Shawn Levy began to imagine him as an underworld baron, a seducer and a braggart. A sort of “Jabba the Hot”, because he capsizes many hearts. (a joke that I credit to my colleague Maxime).
Still according to THR, the film would be a unique film, like Rogue One. A “one shot”, autonomous in the cinematographic saga, with no particular connection with the Skywalker family. The script has reportedly been being written for a year, with the support of screenwriter Jonathan Tropper and there is already talk of filming starting in the fall of 2025.
Ten years ago, when Star Wars returned to the cinema with the postlogy, Shawn Levy was very complimentary of the saga. “ The Star Wars franchise is nothing short of a generational touchstone…. I can think of no comparable cultural phenomenon that has shaped and galvanized audiences as much as Star Wars. »
He added that the franchise “ is inscribed in my — and our — cultural DNA in a unique way and these are enduring threads “. We can only hope that his future film will live up to the compliments he has given. Because it must be admitted that since Disney entered the fray, the franchise has had its ups and downs. Not bad stockings, even.
