In question: the cover of Toto’s cult title, “Africa”.

Wooden language is now on the menu everywhere : in politics, obviouslybut also among athletes in a post-match interview, and even among artistswho are the first to “love everyone” and “send strength to everyone.” Fortunately, in rock, there are still some loudmouths who say out loud what they think, like Liam GallagherFor example. Or even certain artists from the group Toto, when we ask them what they think of Weezer, and their cover of the song “Africa”.

Rather cold atmosphere

We are going to return to the source of this “conflict”, to try to explain it. In 2018, pushed by their fans, Weezer decided to do a cover of Toto’s international hit, “Africa”. A cover that they even ended up releasing on vinyl. And if at the time, the group had rather welcomed this cover, Steve Lukather, member of Toto since 1977, was much more critical:

Our music has so many nuances. We spent so much time meticulously refining the details. These guys churned out this shit in an afternoon.

Guest on the New & Approved podcast, Steve returned to his statement, explaining in a little more detail what he thought of Weezer’s music and this cover in particular, when the host mentioned that Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo said he liked the song :

I don’t know if he likes the song, man. I don’t think that’s the case. I think he did it as a joke and it blew up in his face. Now he has to play it every night!

I tried reaching out to this guy, but it got weird. I don’t want to get to the heart of the matter, but peace and love. It was good for them, it was good for us. God bless you.

Indeed, we can say that the understanding does not seem super cordial between Toto and Weezer…
