By announcing the signing of a decree legally recognizing “only two genders, masculine and feminine,” Donald Trump sent a clear message to the LGBTQ+ community as well as to stars who have long defended gender minorities – and who are often the same people who denounce his remarks and untruths.
Well, it’s a guarantee that the message got through, since many celebrities responded. At the head of the queue, we find Ariana Grande, who shared, in Instagram Story, a message from Matt Bernstein. The podcaster recalls that “queer and trans people existed before Donald Trump and will continue to exist after his death”.
And to address the new Commander-in-Chief directly: “The sun doesn’t care if you sign a decree prohibiting him from getting up every morning, he will do it anyway.”
Light in the face of darkness
A message also shared by Demi Lovato, who has long announced she is non-binary, as well as several others, including that of country singer Chris Housman: “Don't let the darkness of others extinguish your light”.
Garbage also recalled on Instagram that “queer, trans and non-binary” people have existed since the dawn of time. And to give them his support, specifying that “only a person who is uneducated or cruel for pleasure” can think that the LGBT+ community must disappear.
-Lizzo, for her part, addresses those “who may be afraid or disappointed and sad.” The singer of Truth Hurts believes it’s time to come together and “not let what’s happening in the world change your world.” “Remember the value of having a pure heart and being a good person,” she added in her lengthy video on her social media.
Explanation of text
For once, Donald Trump got himself a little confused during his inauguration speech by mixing “sex” (biological) and “gender”. His administration therefore had to clarify (via BBC) what the decree contains: the recognition of two sexes – a term that must be used exclusively by public service employees – male and female, and the impossibility of changing them.
A clarification which does not seem to have struck a chord with Caitlyn Jenner, who congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration which, according to her, he owes to “God”. Some Internet users were still kind enough to explain to him what that means. “He just ordered the government to call you Bruce,” American activist Olivia Julianna told him.
Caitlyn Jenner was born Bruce Jenner and announced her transition in April 2015. The one who was married to Kris Jenner, with whom she has two children, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, had documented her life as a woman without hiding – which she considered it a liberation – in a reality show, I Am Cait (either My name is Caitin French).
