The actress confessed to having experienced “sexual burnout” following the numerous intimate scenes filmed, alone, or with actor Harris Dickinson.
Babygirl was released in theaters on January 15, 2024 and could cause a sensation in the coming weeks. By depicting the meeting and relationship between a businesswoman well established in her life and a younger intern, the film plays the card of erotic thriller and the liberation of female fantasies.
Nicole Kidman finds a new big role there, and shares the poster with Harris Dickinson, a rising film star notably seen in Without filter (2022) et Iron Claw (2024). However, during an interview given to The Sunthe actress shared the complexity of her role, which requires several scenes of a sexual nature, whether alone or in pairs. The Australian actress thus evokes a frustration encountered with the hours of filming requiring physical contact.
The role pushed her to her limits, with a kind of permanent excitement that was very beneficial for the film. However, this had some consequences. Indeed, and as she mentions to the magazine, the actress has “ had to take a break from filming to stop having orgasms. […] There were times when I thought: I don't care if I never get hit again in my life.”.
A film about a woman directed by a woman
But if Nicole Kidman reached this emotional and physical stage at a given moment, it is also thanks to the complicity shared with director Halina Reijn and the feeling of trust between them. The film, inspired in particular by the style of Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) or Michael Haneke (The pianist) is a response from the director to these films that she adores — and which are real references — but which are all written and directed by men.
Babygirl is an erotic feature film about a woman made by a woman, with another perspective and having allowed its main actress to flourish in the role, despite the complexity and this feeling of “sexual burnout” experienced afterwards.
