The pressure that all women feel to “stay young forever” is certainly heightened for the woman who has embodied beauty for generations. Brooke Shields, who turns 60 in May, says she has given up on major procedures and is trying to be kind to herself to counter this anti-aging pressure.

To escape this “dangerous and slippery slope” of the quest for youth which would be associated with beauty, the one who has long worn the label of “the most beautiful woman in the world” has fashioned a new type of symbol for herself: that of the woman aging without complexes.

Brooke Shields says that when her daughter Rowan was a baby, people would say, “Oh, my God, you don’t look like your mother. How come you don’t look more like your mother? Your mother was the most beautiful person in the world!” She calls the comments “completely disgusting,” which meant both that her daughter was not very pretty and that she was no longer beautiful because she no longer looked like the young woman she had been.

The author addresses the miscarriage she suffered when she was in her mid-30s. She describes this episode as “violent”, “excruciatingly painful” and as “the worst 12 consecutive hours” of her life.
