Chris Martin is very proud to see his children take flight. The singer of the group Coldplay nevertheless recently admitted that their flight had a “sad” side, close to the empty nest syndrome felt by some parents when their offspring leave home to strike out on their own. The British musician had daughter Apple, 20, and son Moses, 18, with American actress and businesswoman Gwyneth Paltrow.

The former couple, who divorced amicably in 2015, saw their son leave for college this year, only some time after their daughter. Moses attended Northeastern in Boston, Massachusetts, while Apple continued his studies at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. “It’s sad. It’s the only word,” he told the magazine Rolling Stone.

Normal things in life

However, despite their departure, Chris Martin, who has been dating actress Dakota Johnson since 2017, recognizes the normal course of things regarding the progress of his children in life. “But of course it would be even weirder if they were still in the position of 'I can't leave.' We would then be more worried,” he admitted.

His words echoed those of his ex-wife, who admitted in October during an Instagram Q&A that her children's departure made her sad at times. “It’s very different. I have waves of grief and sadness,” she conceded. Fortunately, the star of Shakespeare in Love, remarried since 2018 to producer Brad Falchuk, found another positive aspect in this situation. “I'm reconnecting with this part of myself that I hadn't felt since I was in my twenties, before I had children,” she explained.

Apple and Moses Martin also continue to share strong family moments despite their recent independence. Last month, the young woman shared a dance with her illustrious father during the debutante ball at the Shangri-La in , where her mother and brother were also present. Something that the singer had “never thought about doing”, but he nevertheless gave in for his daughter whom he “loves so much”.
