“I never thought I would pay homage to an artist for my first album,” admits Kareen Guiock-Thuram. However, this is what she did by recording 14 songs by Nina Simone which she will perform during her concert in Dordogne, Friday December 20 at the La Fabrique cultural center, in Saint-Astier (1).
“The idea came from Dominique Fillon, the jazz pianist with whom I work regularly. He called me to offer me the project. It was as if all the lights in the room came on. It was obvious. I’ve been listening to Nina Simone for a very long time. I performed his songs in clubs with those of Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughan. »
Two passions to pursue simultaneously
Kareen Guiock-Thuram pursued her two passions, Music and journalism. She grew up in Guyana and Guadeloupe, lulled by West Indian rhythms and jazz. And she multiplied her interests. “I have always had a great curiosity about people’s lives. I wrote my first article at 13 for the newspaper ”France Guyane”. »
The artist had a career in radio, then television, becoming a presenter on M6 for more than ten years, on the 12:45 p.m. news. “I continued to sing, but I didn’t say it. Out of shyness and because we have to do our classes. » After taking a break to release her album, she returned to M6 where she hosts the shows “66 minutes” and “66 minutes grand format”.
Finally, for several years, football has entered his life. She married Lilian Thuram, also a music enthusiast.
His own compositions
Her album “Nina” received an excellent reception. Kareen Guiock-Thuram performed at festivals this summer, then embarked on an autumn tour which will end in Saint-Astier.
A second album? “It won’t be a tribute. But you never know,” she adds, cautiously. She would like to present her own compositions there. Music and texts, in English, French and Creole.
