While France will elect its Miss France 2025 in a few hours, the Netherlands will now do without a beauty queen. In a press release released on Thursday, the organizers of the Miss Netherlands competition announced the complete halt to the election.
The reasons for stopping Miss Netherlands
Monica Van Ee, director of the Miss Netherlands committee, insisted that “times have changed” and now is the time”to evolve over time”. Instead of the beauty contest, its organizers have launched a new platform called Niet Meer van Deze Tijd (No more of this time, editor's note) which aims to highlight all beauties. “The idea came about during a conversation among team members wondering why certain ideas, like clinging to certain beauty ideals and social expectations, were still so prevalent. They noticed that more and more young people are opposing these norms, but that there are few platforms that really encourage them to go further and find their own way (…) What if there was a place. where young people could express themselves, share their stories and be inspired by others who also think outside the box? A platform that doesn't just follow trends, but itself launches a movement”we read on this new site which will share “stories that make you think”. “We will cover themes such as self-expression, diversity, creativity, social media, mental well-being and the evolution of society. But it's not just about talking: we invite you to participate, make your voice heard and share your views.”adds the press release.
The reaction of Sylvie Tellier, the former general director of Miss France, to this ruling
Much commented on on social networks, the announcement of the end of Miss Netherlands also caused one of the figures of Miss France to react: Sylvie Tellier. Miss France 2002, and former general director of the Miss France company and Miss Europe Organization, spoke in a story on Instagram to discuss her regrets. “I obviously find it very good to highlight female success stories, but I can only regret the elimination of this national competition. In a world that sometimes lacks light and magic, beauty pageants offer an enchanted parenthesis, a moment to celebrate beauty, freshness and a certain optimism.“, she wrote, emphasizing that the elimination of this competition is “renouncing a tradition that allows us to bring together, dream and celebrate beauty in all its forms”. For Sylvie Tellier, these elections are not reductive, quite the contrary. “They also highlight the personality, values and ability of the candidates to inspire“, she said.
