For the first two films in the “Sonic” saga, Jim Carrey lent his voice to the character of Dr. Robotnik, to the delight of his fans. Known for his humor and his abilities as a voice actor, the actor had largely slowed down his activities in recent years to treat his mental health.
His last major role dates back to 2014 in the second part of “Dumb and Dumber”. For the rest, he only made quick appearances in feature films in 2016 and 2017.
A desire to retire
In 2022, the actor announced it with almost certainty to “Access Hollywood”: “Well, I'm retiring. Yeah, probably. I'm pretty serious”, he said during the promotion of “Sonic 2 “. At the time, however, he kept the door open to return to the world of showbusiness: “It depends. If angels bring some kind of script written in golden ink that tells me that it's really important that people see it, I might be able to continue, but now I'm taking a break.”
And he clarified: “I really love my quiet life and I really love painting, and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity saying as long as time exists – I've had enough, I've done enough.
A return to the forefront
However, Jim Carrey agreed to return for “Sonic 3”. His retirement announced in 2022 was short-lived. But what pushed him to leave? The answer is simple: money. Asked by AP Entertainment, the actor doesn't hide it: “I came back to this universe because I can play a genius, which is a bit of an exaggeration. Plus, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
Since 2023, the actor has also been trying to sell his property located in Los Angeles, and he has not hesitated to reduce the price on several occasions. Initially on sale for nearly 29 million euros, his mansion is now offered at 20 million, but without much success with buyers. Hence the actor's need for liquidity?
