Tuesday December 3, 2024, Faustine Bollaert was at the helm of a new issue of the show It starts today on France 2. That day, the theme of the program was centered on the celebrities concerned by a secret regarding the identity of their biological fatheras part of the week dedicated to secrets and lies. The host thus received several guests on her set, including the writer Nathalie Rheims.
The latter took advantage of her presence in the France 2 show to reveal that she never wanted to know who her biological father was. “I always called my mother 'mom', but I never said 'dad'. I called him 'Maurice' as soon as I could speak, while my brother and sister called him 'dad'. And everyone thought that was original on my part. I myself didn't know why I called him 'Maurice' actually.“, first explained the daughter of academician Maurice Rheims. During her childhood, Nathalie Rheims went to see a psychologist named Serge every Thursday. One day, she asked her mother about this.
“Why do I go see Serge every Thursday?” she asked him. “Because he saw you born“, replied the writer's mother. “I build myself with these two extraordinary men. That I love as much as they love me I think. (…) There are things that seem strange to me. (…) One day, I met his wife in the hallway. She looks at me and says: 'It's crazy how much you look like your mother.' But with such an aggressive air that I say to myself: 'What have I actually done?'“, then explained Nathalie Rheims. She will eventually understand that her mother is having a romantic affair with her shrink. “I am continuing this investigation which fascinates me. So I go back to my mother and I say to her: 'Do you think I am Maurice's daughter or Serge's daughter?' (…) She said to me: 'I don't know. I was in Corsica with both. (…) I made love with both so I don't know‘“, then revealed the writer.
Nathalie Rheims says she would have “gone crazy” if she had known who her biological father was
“She adds very quickly, as if to lift a weight: 'But if you want, you take a paternity test, they will agree'. (…) I knew at that moment that the only thing that was going to save me was to not know. I don't answer my mother about this paternity test thing. I knew from the start that I wouldn't do it. Because it was impossible, because I loved them too much. And they gave me this kind of unconditional love“, finally concluded Nathalie Rheims. While specifying that she would be “gone crazy“if she had known the truth.
