In the presence of representatives of the municipality, Pascal Triphonoff, Chinese painter, inaugurated the exhibition of his work on Friday, November 8, 2024. Repentance in the gallery of Chinon town hall. “I see paintings in people, but without seeing the details of their different layers, of their past choices. What interests me is the story of the choices of a life that I wanted to signify, the painting of a life, the painting of my lifeconfides the artist. For thirty-five years, I searched for a singular idea, my idea, my singularity. »

It was Covid and personal events that triggered the discovery of Pascal Triphonoff’s concept. “It was a sudden realization that struck me, I literally remained absorbed by what I had found for three full weeks”explains Pascal Triphonoff.

Inspired by a technique from 17e century

It is the creation of a continuum of canvases painted in acrylic, each of them being numbered. The artist digitally reproduces each painted canvas, to create the background for the next painting, simultaneously changing a color and a shape, with each new canvas. Like a note on a score, this work reads like a pictorial sentence. Pascal Triphonoff seeks in this artistic and conceptual approach to signify the alteration of memory.

Why “Repentance”? It is the technical term which designates, in painting in the 17e century, the different tests or corrections made to the works, hidden versions of a work, under the final version today the only one visible to the viewer. “I forbid myself from destroying disappointing regrets because accepting them guides me towards satisfying possibilities”specifies the artist.

A total of around 300 paintings have been created over the past three years, including a selection of around a hundred selected works which are available for visitors to see.

“Repentance” until December 8, 2024 at the gallery of Chinon town hall on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. FREE ENTRANCE.
