As serious and formal as it was,
Queen Elizabeth II had a great sense of humor!

At least that’s what his ex-daughter-in-law, Sarah Ferguson, claims. Podcast guest White Wine Question Time Last June, Prince Andrew’s ex-wife recalled the day she was summoned by Elizabeth II after being arrested by the police with Lady Diana for “identity theft“.

The case dates back to 1986. When she was preparing to marry Prince Andrew of England, Sarah Ferguson decided to celebrate her hen party with her future sister-in-law, Lady Diana. The two young women, aged 25 for Diana and 27 for Sarah Ferguson, decided to go out in costume. But the evening did not turn out well.

“Fortunately, His Majesty laughed.”

“At my bachelorette party, we dressed up as policewomen and were arrested by the park police, recalled the Duchess of York on Kate Thornton’s podcast. We were put in the back of a police van and Diana leaned over to eat one of the man driving’s bacon chips. Then we were arrested. (…) We both had to give up our rings because I had one at the time, It’s a very good memory. (…) And we ended up being released.”

Although not serious, The incident soon reached the ears of the head of the family, Elizabeth II. Less than twenty-four hours later, the Queen summoned the two young women to Buckingham. But while Sarah Ferguson expected a scolding, she ended up spending some quality time with Andrew’s mother. “Of course, I was summoned by the boss the next day. But fortunately Her Majesty laughed.”, she continued in White Wine
Question Time.

Sarah Ferguson and Lady Diana, a lifelong friendship

Amusingly, this anecdote highlights the cheerfulness that Elizabeth II could display, but also the strength of the friendship that bound Sarah Ferguson to Lady Diana. Very close, the two young women often appeared together during public appearances of the royal family. Unfortunately, this beautiful relationship ended in 1997 with the premature death of the Princess of Wales.

Despite everything, the Duchess of York continues to honour this friendship. This 1is July 2024, on the occasion of what should have been the 64the Lady Di’s birthday, she paid tribute to her in an Instagram post.
“Happy birthday to my dear friend, Diana, she wrote. You were a pillar of light and love. And what a legacy you left behind. I will always remember our laughter and this closeness of spirit that I found in you. I’m sure you’re watching over us, always. Rest in peace my friend.”
