Third day of the stay in Greenland for Frederik X and Mary
King Frederik X, 56, and Queen Mary, 52, are on their first visit to Greenland as sovereigns. Greenland is one of the three constituent countries of the Kingdom of Denmark. The week-long trip is a cruise aboard the royal ship Dannebrog, which makes stops along its route along the west coast of Greenland from north to south.
On the third day of their trip to Greenland, King Frederik and Queen Mary reached the island of Attu. This small island has a single village of the same name, with about 200 inhabitants. The royal couple was welcomed by the mayor, Ane Hansen, and members of the municipal council. The island is part of the municipality of Qeqertalik. The whole of Greenland is divided into five municipalities and a nature reserve.

In Attu, King Frederik and Queen Mary were given a tour of the main settlements in the village. The King and Queen walked through the streets, passing the church, the school and the children’s playground. Along the way, King Frederik also unveiled a monument. A stone is being erected to mark the 200th anniversary of the town of Attu.
At the church, King Frederik took part in an event marking the 50th anniversary of the parish church. In the village nativity scene, Queen Mary discussed the programme Friends which is implemented in the establishment. It is an anti-harassment program that is supported by his foundation.
This third day of the visit lasted only half a day. Shortly before noon, the king and queen met the population at the village house, around a coffee. A choir sang traditional songs and anthems, before attending a demonstration show of arctic sports. On Tuesday, the royal couple will be all day in Sisimiut, the second largest city in the country after the capital, Nuuk.
