After serving for a time as Minister of the Economy during François Hollande’s five-year term, Emmanuel Macron left the government to launch his own political party (La République en Marche, editor’s note) with a view to the presidential election of 2017. A winning bet, given that he was elected President of the Republic that year, thus succeeding François Hollande at the Élysée. Subsequently, Emmanuel Macron ran for re-election in 2022. Once again, the French decided to make him head of state until 2027. However, the resident of the Élysée multiplied setbacks during his second five-year term. Indeed, he failed to obtain an absolute majority in the National Assembly during the 2022 legislative elections.

Two years later, the National Rally came out on top in the European elections on Sunday, June 9, 2024, far ahead of Emmanuel Macron’s party. Following this result, the Head of State made a historic decision by announcing the dissolution of the National Assembly. Consequently, early legislative elections were put in place to elect new deputies. The first round of this vote took place on Sunday, June 30, 2024. As in every election, Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron went to Le Touquet to vote like any other French citizen. That day, the President of the Republic also walked the streets of this city trying to go incognito. To do this, he had adopted a look similar to that of the comedian Laurent Baffie. Unfortunately for him, people recognized him. A video of the President “camouflaged” was even relayed massively in the media, as well as on social networks.

The first round of the legislative elections is a new failure for Emmanuel Macron

With around 67% turnout, these legislative elections have the lowest abstention rate since the 1997 vote, when Jacques Chirac also decided to dissolve the National Assembly. Unfortunately for Emmanuel Macron, the results of the vote were not very favorable for the candidates of his political party. Indeed, the National Rally came out on top once again with around 34% of the vote, ahead of the New Popular Front, which totaled around 29% of the vote. Ensemble pour la République only came third with around 20% of the vote, ahead of Les Républicains, which totaled around 10% of the vote.
