Released by editions Atelier EXB from the title Horses of Jane Evelyn Atwoodwhich presents a little-known part of the photographer’s work: her passion for horses. She presents it as follows:

Since I was very young, it has always been a love story between horses and me.

When we lived in Tennessee, it didn’t cost anything to ride a horse and that’s where I learned how to do it. Much later, I started show jumping.

But once in , I became a photographer. There was no question of doing anything other than photography, especially not a sport where I risked breaking a leg and no longer being able to earn a living.

After doing all the hard subjects I’m known for today, and especially after losing my best friend to a horrible and cruel illness, I no longer wanted to photograph sad things. I had had enough. I knew what I would find if I went to certain places. And I didn’t want to face it anymore.

In 2014 I was invited to an artist residency on the Island of Ouessant. It was winter, the storms were coming one after the other, the wind never stopped blowing. Very few people, but horses. I started taking photos of them and it was like a light bulb went on in my head.

Horses!

The subject had always been there, but I had never broached it.
