Three painters from different worlds, Gersi Reis, Sylvie Canon and Karen Hodicq, came together for a joint project called “Mixing palettes”. They chose the iconic and extraordinary artist Frida Kalho as their starting point. This exhibition can be discovered at the Pagaret center in Montjoly.

Despite different styles but, they say, which complement each other, Gersi Reis, Sylvie Canon and Karen Hodicq were able to create a particular harmony, particularly in the poster painting created with three hands.

Frida Kalho, the famous Mexican painter of the last century, model of creativity and resilience gave them this opportunity. Sylvie Canon had the idea of this collective exhibition and above all of creating this joint work. This gives a singular portrait, an intriguing cross-view that captures the imagination.

Gersi Reis, who is very appreciated for these female portraits, immediately joined the project:

« We work on the figurative as well as the abstract by exploiting the image of women. It is also a tribute to the female artists of Guyana. I am happy to present my paintings, women are the common thread of my creativity »

When she arrived in Guyana 6 years ago, Sylvie Canon immediately loved the abstract and offbeat portraits of Gersi Reis. Quite the opposite of his figurative work:

« I don’t exhibit much. In recent years, he has worked more on tea bags. But for some time now, I have returned to classic painting on canvas. I was tormented by the desire to create a pictorial score that combines our different approaches. And I suggested that we make a portrait of Frida Kalho, a muse, a sort of influencer, a woman with committed human and artistic values. A personality who well represented the strong Guyanese woman. Everyone could recognize her knowing that there would be a completely offbeat side. I worked on the background to recall the Amazon, did part of the face and asked Gersi to do the other. »

To bring the final touch to this collective composition, Gersi Reis called on Karen Hodicq, who takes an abstract approach. Participating in this collective exhibition was a real challenge for this artist who is currently pursuing a reflective process on herself. :

« I am very attentive to what life brings us. I live in nature and it inspires me. This helped me to finish this portrait and thus put my personal touch on this creation. I created the hummingbird, the flowers in Frida Kalho’s hair, whom I love very much. She is an extraordinary, very passionate woman who was able to transform the very difficult events she experienced. I recognize myself in this resilience, this ability to bounce back to be stronger.”

Karen Hodicq holds nothing back, paints, makes collages : « I don’t want to fit into a particular style. I do intuitive painting, I need to feel the paint with my fingers… ».

This exhibition has been visible since November 4 at the Pagaret center in Montjoly, it will last until November 22.
