Bérénice Bejo returned to her collaboration with Jean Dujardin in The Artist. She confided about this experience.
It was in 2011 that Bérénice Bejo experienced enormous worldwide success in the cinema with the film The Artist in which she plays opposite Jean Dujardin. This is not the first time that the two actors have played together, since they were already on display together in 2006 in OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spies. For their participation in The Artist, Bérénice Bejo and Jean Dujardin won numerous awards including Best Actor. Michel Hazanavicius won the Oscar for Best original screenplay, that of Best Director. The Artist also received the 2012 Oscar for Best Film.
Bérénice Bejo has regrets
Three years after the film’s release in the cinema, Bérénice Bejo spoke about the treatment of her participation in The Artist compared to that of Jean Dujardin. “ The press highlighted Jean Dujardin more than me during the promotion. I have not commented on this situation. I never wanted to start a controversy, but that’s why, when I was given the César for best actress, I said: “I wanted that!” “Because I really wanted it”she explained in the columns of the magazine Grazia before specifying: “It’s neither his fault nor mine: it’s the media’s.”
A complicated promotion
The success of The Artist gave birth to a global promotion which gave birth to sequences that Bérénice Bejo remembers very well. “It was very complicated. We ended up completely crazy with Jean. I gave his answers and he gave mine. I think there are some completely crazy interviews because we were really talking nonsense. I didn’t even know what I was saying anymore. I heard ‘dog’ and I said something about dogs, I heard ‘claquettes’ and I answered ‘claquettes’”she revealed.
Bérénice Bejo thought she would be fired from OSS 117
Guest of the show In the retro on France Bleu, the actress made revelations about the filming of OSS 117. “During the first two or three weeks, I said to myself: ‘I’m going to get fired’. I thought I was going to get fired (…) I found it inconceivable, I didn’t understand what I was doing there. I was so anxious that sometimes Michel asked me something and I didn’t understand.. There are jokes that completely missed me.” Note that Bérénice Bejo and Michel Hazanavicius are a couple and parents of two children.
