They have been hanging, since October 12, 2024, on the walls of the Center Cristel Art Publisher in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine). Lithographs made by Salvador Dali in 1973 to illustrate Pantagruel by Rabelais.
Printed in 250 copies
25 lithographs printed in 250 copies on Japanese paper, constituting one of the monuments of pictorial surrealism. “Never has Dalí appeared so free, so inventive, so provocative and even, dare we say it, as delirious as in this series of 25 works”, indicated Ariel Termine, advisor to international artists, during the inauguration of the Saint-Malo exhibition.
An echo of the “Surrealism” exhibition at the Center Pompidou
Here we are: surrealism, an international artistic movement founded in October 1924 with the release of the Surrealist Manifesto, an essay by André Breton. Artistic movement which will affect literature, poetry and the arts, becoming one of the most fertile in contemporary history. Miro, Giacometti, Max Ernest, Picasso, Paul Klee, Man Ray, De Chirico, Magritte, at one time or another, defended the flag of surrealism. But the best known of them obviously remains Salvador Dalí. Hence this exhibition “Dalí. Rabelaisian Surrealist”, which the organizers wanted as “an echo of the “Surrealism” exhibition currently organized at the Center Pompidou, in Paris until January 13. »
Until January 11
It is therefore no coincidence that the exhibition “Dalí. Rabelaisian Surrealist” will be held in Saint-Malo until January 11. A voluntary correspondence of dates, which explains the importance of the works presented.
For several years, we have been impatiently awaiting this meeting. This must be the first time that this very homogeneous ensemble has been presented in Brittany.
“A little Breton together, moreover, since readers of Rabelais know that Gargantua and Pantagruel, in their adventures, came as far as Dol-de-Bretagne,” explains art editor Élodie Penot. A set that visitors will be able to admire until January 11, 2025.
